What to Expect
For many, the DOT physical can be stressful, since it can determine the fate of their careers. Being prepared and knowing what to expect from your DOT physical can make all the difference.
The objective of a DOT physical is to evaluate and ensure that each driver is capable and healthy enough to successfully operate a commercial motor vehicle. A driver who has health issues such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes or poor vision could be hazardous on the road if their medical conditions become unmanageable. The DOT physical also includes drug and alcohol testing.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, after several significant transportation accidents, Congress passed the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991, because they recognized the safety need for ensuring drug- and alcohol-free transportation employees. The DOT is the federal agency responsible for protecting the traveling public and keeping the country’s transportation system safe. One way the DOT accomplishes its mission is by ensuring that transportation employees in safety-sensitive positions — such as the operators of planes, trains and buses — are not using drugs or alcohol on the job. “DOT compliance” means that the employer of safety-sensitive employees is maintaining the required employee drug and alcohol testing programs.
The U.S Department of Transportation requires successful completion of a qualified training program and passing a monitored proficiency demonstration as stated in the CFR 49. If your company is regulated by the DOT, you must comply with workplace drug and alcohol screening. Most CMV drivers are required to take a DOT physical exam every 2 years to maintain their DOT medical certificate.
